  • Which courses can I take?

Generally, we recommend to take these courses in German or English, which you can find in the course directory (a list will open, once you click on the respective links). Here are some recommendations for courses in Public International Law, European Law, Comparative Law and Legal Philosophy. If you are interested in Austrian law, the course "030132 KU - the Austrian Legal System" is held especially for Erasmus students.

    Diploma/Bachelor/Master courses?

In Austria, the regular law degree is a four-year-diploma. There is an alternative "Bachelor/Master of Interational Legal Studies" offered as well, which, however contains less courses. Incoming Bachelor- and Master Erasmus students should therefore always take courses from the course directory of the Diploma-programme, which offers the international BA/MA courses in addition to many more. Regarding difficulty level, there is no distinction between Bachelor/Master/Diploma courses.

  • Which courses should I not take?

In order for your ECTS to get accredited, the courses you attend need to offer a means of evaluation (mostly final exams)."VO" lectures, unless specially mentioned in the u:find description, do not offer these exams, and are therefore not suited for Erasmus-Incomings. Furthermore, you are not allowed to sit "MP"-exams for regular students, such as the "MP Introduction to International Law".

We also do not recommend taking "UE" exercises in Austrian law fields, as the workload is often disproportionate to the ECTS awarded.

  • Types of Courses

In the course directory there are different types of course abbreviations:

VO - Lectures, where attendance is not mandatory and (unless explicitly mentioned in the directory) no final exams are offered. Mostly not suited for Erasmus students!

KU - Courses with mandatory attendance and means of evaluation, mostly in form of a final exam and/or a paper.

SE - Seminars with mandatory attendance, where everyone will get assigned a topic to write a paper about and present.

RE - Comparable to a "VO", this is a repetition course for regular students taking Austrian exams, which is not suited for Erasmus students!

UE - Exercise with mandatory attendance, continuous evalutation and at least - mostly two - exam(s). Not suited for Erasmus students (s. "Which courses should I not take?")

  • When is the registration period?

    For weekly courses

Winter semester: Between the middle and end of September

Summer semester: Between the middle and end of February

    For block courses

Varied, usually in the month leading up to the start of the course.

  • What do I do if I got waitlisted?

Show up to the first session of your preferred course and talk to the lecturer about your situation after the lecture. In most instances, waitlisted students will get admitted this way. However, this is not a claimable right!

  • What do I do if the registration period has lapsed?

If the registration period has lapsed, there is two things you can do!

    1. Research other courses that you might take, where the registration window is still open.

    2. Show up to the first session of your preferred course and talk to the lecturer about your situation. If they are willing to take you up, they can register you outside of the registration window.

  • How do I register for my courses?

The registration works via the course directory ("u:find") and the "u:space" network. First, find your course on u:find, then click on 'Register/deregister for this course' (mind the registration deadline!). You will automatically get redirected to the u:space network, where you will need to finish your registration.

Until the end of the registration period, your application will appear in yellow. Once the deadline has lapsed, you will get assigned to your courses, which will appear in green, if you have obtained a spot.
